WPC 2014 – One-click deployment of SharePoint Farm on Azure

At WPC 2014, Scott Gu announced several new capabilities in Azure and one such new capability is the templates available for ready deployment. Scott demonstrated creation of a SharePoint 2013 farm that can be highly available and demonstrated that we can customize the SQL and other settings. This is a great feature and I couldn’t wait to try this. Here is a quick overview. TL;DR This is a great step towards demonstrating the platform capabilities. I am really excited to see this capability. I can expect many more Microsoft teams and partners creating such templates for faster deployment of multi-tier applications. For all the virtual machines, we can customize host name prefixes and pricing tiers. Each VM tier has a different set of pricing options you can select from. When it comes to customizing the farm configuration, there are limited set of options here. Domain Controllers: You cannot specify an existing AD forest. You can select the size of the DC VMs. There are not many settings you can customize here. SQL Servers: You can …

PoshUtils: Downloading SharePoint 2013 prerequisites for offline install

Okay, this is yet another post on downloading the SharePoint 2013 prerequisites for offline install. I am sure you have seen many and everyone has their own way. But I think none of those posts/scripts – at least the ones I read – don’t give you a unified way to download the prerequisites for all combinations of Windows Server OS and SQL Server versions. So, here is my take. The idea of this script is to use the features of PowerShell 3.0 such as Out-GridView and default parameter values to reduce the amount of code required. Note: The list of prerequisites I compiled here is what I perceived looking at technet documentation. Do let me know if I missed out anything or need to change something here. Let us see the code first.

In the above code, I am using a CSV file I compiled with all the SharePoint 2013 prerequisite information. This is the key here. You can download the CSV file here. Instead of a hash, I preferred to use a CSV file as …

Remote install of SharePoint 2010 prerequisites

I’ve published a free book on PowerShell 2.0 remoting. You can download it at: Did you ever try installing SharePoint 2010 prerequisites remotely? If so, you would know by now that it is not easy. Essentially because of the Windows update packages in the prerequisites. It is a known issue that Wusa.exe cannot be invoked in a remote session. If you try to install SharePoint 2010 prerequisites remotely — either using PowerShell remoting or WMI — it fails with an error code 5. We cannot really claim to have a fully unattended SharePoint deployment process until we have a solution to the prerequisite install process. So, with that background, I started working on the script for remotely installing SharePoint 2010 prerequisites. In today’s post, I will show you how to do that. To achieve this, I used a combination of PsExec.exe and PowerShell remoting. Here are the prerequisites for this script to work. PowerShell remoting must be enabled the remote system where you are deploying SharePoint prerequisites. On the remote system, CredSSP must be enabled …

SharePoint 2010 (beta) standalone install on Windows 7

I am a bit late on writing about this but nevertheless, I think I have some useful information to share. I needed a demo system for my SharePoint 2010 talk at Bangalore IT Pro user group meet tomorrow. For this purpose, I started installing SharePoint 2010 on my Windows 7 laptop. I knew that there are a few issues with SharePoint 2010 standalone deployments on Windows 7. You can read about it here. Before you get started with the install, here is a quick note about using SharePoint 2010 on Windows 7 (as posted on MSDN) The development environment that you create by using these instructions will not support SharePoint farm installations, and you should not host active production sites with this configuration. These instructions will enable you to get started with an environment that is specifically suited to developing SharePoint custom solutions. Now to the real stuff There is a prerequisite installer included with SharePoint 2010. However, this won’t run on Windows 7. For installing SharePoint 2010, you need the following prerequisites. You can …

SharePoint 2010 – Quick snack

This is a slide deck showing a quick overview of what’s new in SharePoint 2010. This information is based on my understanding from various resources on Internet. As it is mentioned in the deck, I still don’t have access to SharePoint 2010 bits and the information in the deck may not be completely accurate. Don’t hesitate to provide your feedback on the content.
