BITS File Transfer Power Pack 1.0.0.10 released

I just made an updated release of BITS file transfer PowerPack. In this release, I re-organized the node tree and added a few new features. Since the node tree is re-orgnized, you will see issues when performing auto update of this powerpack. Instead, you can remove the old version of this powerpack and import the update. Here are the changes to node tree Node Tree I have added List Active BITS Jobs – All users option to enable taking ownership of other user’s job. This is possible only if you have administrator previleges.   Start File transfer has been renamed to Start Web downloads and this option is meant only for starting web downloads. You will see an error if you try to perform local file transfers using this.     Import URL feature is a completely new feature. @Dmitry asked me about this here. Not just that, he also provided a starting point for that here. This new option takes a web URL as input and gets back with all the “possible” downloads available …

Update: Internet explorer plugin to complement BITS File Transfer PowerPack

I got a few questions around the IE Plugin for BITS based downloads. One of them was what Wayne mentioned here. So, I decided write a bit around the issue Wayne is facing. Like I mentioned in the reply there, it could be potentially because of two reasons. 1. You are using x64 OS Windows x64 OS has got two versions of IE — both 32bit and 64bit. The 64bit one is named Internet Explorer – 64bit. So, if you copy the IE plugin files to C:\windows\System32 and use 32bit IE, you won’t be able to run this plugin. You need to copy these files to C:\windows\SysWow64 too. So, the safe method would be to extract the files to both the locations. 2. You have not enabled PowerShell script execution Since this plugin uses .PS1 script, you need to enable PowerShell script execution. To do this, run the following cmdlet at PowerShell prompt Set-ExecutionPolicy -executionPolicy Unrestricted or Set-ExecutionPolicy -executionPolicy ByPass If you have taken care of these two, you should not have any issues running …

Internet explorer plugin to complement BITS File Transfer PowerPack

Update: If you have issues running this IE plugin, please read the update here. One shortcome of BITS File Transfer PowerPack is that you need to manually collect the source URL from web pages and then use that URL in start file transfer action. This can be quite painful depending on how many such URLs you need to copy. Long ago, Microsoft posted a BITS IE plugin sample written in C++ on MSDN. This plugin provides an option in the IE context menu for hyperlinks to download the content using BITS. That is a nice option. Instead of using the SDK sample as is, I just created a PowerShell script to replace the C++ executable so that this plugin can be used on any system with PowerShell 2.0 and BITS 4.0. How to enable this plugin? First, download the plugin zip file below This package contains two files 1. BITSIEPlugin.htm This has some javascript code to invoke the PowerShell script when you select “Download using BITS” option in the IE context menu for a hyperlink. …

BITS file transfer power pack – release 1.0.06

I made another release of BITS file transfer power pack yesterday. I kinda wrote the entire power pack from scratch in this release. There are some fundamental code changes and feature additions in this release. You can read the user guide for detailed information on how to use these feature. Here is how the main node looks now. No major changes on this front. I just renamed “Get BITS Jobs” to “List active BITS Jobs”. This particular option now returns a custom object than just spitting out usual BITS job object. I did this to have some control over what I want to display in the results grid when you select this option. Especially, this option now lists % tranfer progress information for each BITS job. Although, this does not refresh automatically, it provides a high level view of the overall progress. As you see the screen capture here, there are quite a few additions to the links/actions. While these additions are the new features I introduced in this release, there are a few changes …

BITS file transfer PowerPack for PowerGUI

I have been writing PowerShell scripts for various things but never really released anything developed in PowerShell. This is evident more or less from the Script Center downloads on this site. However, there is a change in that thought process now. I am going to do more work on PowerShell than VBScript. First step in this process is the release of my BITS file transfer PowerPack. This is my first PowerPack release and first ever PowerShell release to the community. This powerpack is self-explanatory and easy to use. I am working on a user guide for this and will post it on the publications page as soon as it is ready. Download the PowerPack and do let me know your views. BTW, I just spent 2 hours writing this PowerPack. PowerGUI PowerPack development is quite fast and easy. You can refer to Kirk Munro’s post on http://poshoholic.com. This is just the initial release and I will update this with more features in the next release.
